About Mercari Group “I want to circulate our limited resources to help society thrive.” Mercari was born from this idea our founder Shintaro Yamada had during a trip he took around the world. He imagined a marketplace app that would allow anyone to easily buy and sell items using their smartphone. The power of technology has now enabled people anywhere in the world to easily connect and enjoy the experience of buying and selling with each other. By doing so, we at Mercari seek to create a prospering society that circulates the limited resources we have. Mercari, the Japan-based company that operates the marketplace app Mercari, has as its mission to “create value in a global marketplace where anyone can buy & sell.” Mercari was founded in 2013, expanding its business to the US the following year. With the US app, localized specifically for the US market, we aim to create a product that enables people to sell their possessions online with minimal effort under the mission of “making selling easier than buying.” The next service we released was Merpay, launched in Japan in 2019. It provides an easy-to-use payment service within the Mercari app. Based on its mission of “building trust for a seamless society,” Merpay seeks to create a society where anyone can realize their dreams through a new ecosystem centered on credit. Internally, diversity and inclusion (D&I) continues to be a focus area for us, as the key to helping the companies within the Mercari Group to achieve their respective missions.
